This notice explains the cookies and similar technologies used on the Decision Athlete website, what each one does and how long it lasts. It should be read with our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle personal information more generally and how to contact us.

1. What cookies and similar technologies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website stores in your browser. Websites can also store information directly in your browser using local storage. Both allow a site to remember something between pages or between visits.

2. What we use and why

We keep the number of technologies on this website small. Each one falls into one of three groups.

Strictly necessary

These keep the website secure and working. They do not require your consent.

• __cf_bm (cookie, 30 minutes). Our hosting network may set this cookie to distinguish people from automated traffic and protect the website from abuse. It does not identify you.
• decision-athlete-consent:v1 (local storage, 12 months). Records whether you accepted or declined analytics, so we do not ask on every page. After 12 months we ask again.

Reading preferences

These remember choices and progress you would expect the website to keep.

• decision-athlete-book:v1 (local storage, until you clear it). When you read the book online, this remembers the chapter you last opened, how far through it you were and which chapters you have finished, so you can pick up where you left off. It stays in your browser and is not sent to us.

Analytics

These help us understand how the website is used, such as which pages are read, how far down a page readers get and where visitors arrive from. They are provided by Ploy, the platform that hosts this website, and the data is sent to this website’s own address.

These are only set if you choose “Accept analytics”. Until you do, the analytics service does not run.

• ploy_anon_id (cookie and local storage, 1 year). A random identifier that lets us recognise a returning browser. It does not contain your name or contact details.
• ploy_session (local storage, 30 minutes of inactivity). Groups the pages viewed during one visit.
• ploy_pending_events (local storage, a few seconds). Briefly holds activity records until they are sent, so they are not lost if a page closes.

The information collected includes pages viewed, the referring website, scroll depth, clicks on buttons and links, form interactions, and browser and device details. We do not use it to infer anything about your health.

3. What we do not use

We do not currently use advertising cookies, social media tracking pixels or retargeting tools. We do not embed third-party videos or social media widgets that set their own cookies. The fonts on this website are served from our own domain, not from a third-party font service.

If this changes, we will update this notice first.

4. Managing your choices

When you first visit, we ask whether you accept analytics cookies. Accepting and declining are equally easy, and the website works the same either way. You can change your choice at any time using “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page. If you decline or withdraw consent, the analytics cookie and local storage are removed from your browser.

Most browsers also let you see, block and delete cookies and local storage through their settings. You can also clear the reading position stored for the book by clearing this website’s data in your browser.

Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the website from working. Blocking analytics or reading preferences will not affect your ability to read the website or the book, although the reader will no longer remember your place.

We will update this notice when the technologies used on the website change. The date at the top shows when it was last revised.
